What threats does your local Association face day to day? What issue drains your energy and demands your attention? The answer to these questions are the critical issues facing urban local Associations. This training will assist local presidents in framing the critical issues (including healthcare and alternative compensation) and on organizing and developing strategies to manage these issues. Every crisis presents opportunity, rising to the challenge of crisis, provides the seeds of growth and renewal for the local Association.

5-8: Local President's Training - So You Won the Election! Now What? (Washington, DC) Registration Form
Introduction:
The success of any newly elected president will depend on obtaining buy-in from the Association’s executive committee, governance, managers and staff. It will also depend in part on the participation and satisfaction from both internal and external stakeholders of the organization.
Rationale:
The role of president will require assessing the opportunities, threats, personal/professional filters and tapping into underlining abilities and strengths. It is also important to understand this role will require fostering collaboration, collective decision-making and periodically expressing what is needed for sustaining organizational effectiveness while adjusting to change.
Aim:
The aim of this training session is to explore the opportunities and threats related to fulfilling the role of president. This session will examine operational demands, as well as the concepts for addressing potential barriers that may hinder the transition into this new role and the implications resulting from creating change within the association’s structure, public appearance and viability.
This session is based on the assumption that a president’s ability to becoming an effective leader will depend on assessing his or hers internal capacity, readiness to take on this role, defining expectations, and creating a supportive environment that will guide the association’s work and ensuring success in implementing related activities.
Focus:
This session will include concepts critical to personality and communication style, ways to increase collaboration and effectiveness. During this session, emphasis will be placed on practical hands on activities. The participants will explore the issues of working in this new environment, assessing readiness, and exploring ways to systematically identify existing opportunities for addressing organizational dynamics, and collaborative decision making practices.
