- Confronting the future of distance learning,
one in 10 of NEA higher education faculty members have taught a distance
learning course in the last five years. The vast majority of faculty
have very positive feelings about distance learning. This survey taps
into the perceptions of over 400 members who teach distance learning
courses, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of distance teaching
and learning.

critical to ensuring quality Internet-based distance learning. The report,
supported by NEA and Blackboard, was prepared by the Institute for Higher

the findings from the National Center for Education Statistics survey
on distance education for the 1997-98 academic year. While distance
education offerings are becoming more commonplace, questions regarding

still must be addressed.

- This report is a review of the contemporary
research on the effectiveness of distance education in higher education.
Commissioned by NEA and AFT, The Institute for Higher Education Policy

- The center was established for scholars who
have a common interest in doing research, studying, and teaching in
the field of distance education. An electronic journal, The American
Journal of Distance Education and several other on-line resources
are available on this site.
- United States
Distance Learning Association
- This nonprofit organization formed in 1987
to promote the development and application of distance learning for
education and training. Their electronic journal, The ED Journal
is touted as the only academic journal specifically for distance learning.
