We use energy in almost everything we do, but if we aren't careful there won't be enough. Engineers have their work cut out for them.
The National Academies Engineer Girl! program invited submissions for its 2008 essay contest Engineering Energy for the Future —an essay of no more than 750 words describing how engineers will provide energy for the future. The contest, open to individual girls and boys, had three age categories:
- Ages 8–11, 3rd–5th grade
- Ages 12–14, 6th–8th grade
- Ages 15–18, 9th–12th grade
First-place winners received a check for $500; second-place entries were awarded $250; third-place entries were awarded $100.
